W:Mr. Hudson, what’s that you’re looking at?

M:Hi, Ms. Green. I’m checking the online survey responses for our school’s new dormitory name.

W:Oh, the survey results are out?

M:Not yet. The survey deadline is this Sunday, but the problem is that only about 10% of the students have responded so far.

W:Wow, so few. With such a low response rate, it’s hard to say that the results properly reflect the students’ preferences.

M:Exactly. And there isn’t much time left.

W:I think more students should take the survey so we can choose a dormitory name that reflects what most of them want.

M:You’re right. Maybe I should send out the group messages to students again.

W:Good idea. I’ll also think of how to boost students’ participation.

M:Thank you, Ms. Green.

M:This activity is based on practicing a short task repetitively, which increases attention length.

W:Hmm... That makes sense.

M:Hello, FitQuest4U subscribers! I’m John Willer. Do you often feel pain in your legs after a run? Then, the following tip may help you. Shortening your steps can reduce the risk of injury when you run. If you take long steps, additional stress is put on the hips, knees, and ankles, increasing the risk of injury. Instead, if you shorten your steps, your body is placed in a natural forward-moving position, which decreases the amount of force coming down on your joints. So, to lower the chance of injury when you run, shortening your steps may be the answer. That’s all for this video, and I’ll see you in the next one.

W:Hello, Better Together TV subscribers! Today, I’d like to share a small yet powerful tip for people struggling to improve their relationships with people around them - try writing handwritten letters! Unlike digital messages, which are quick and effortless, handwritten letters take time and thought. This makes them a more meaningful way to convey sincerity and genuine emotions, helping the reader feel truly valued. Handwritten letters can also be kept and reread, allowing their genuine message to be felt over and over again. Thanks to these benefits, they’re a great way to deepen and strengthen relationships. So, if you’re having trouble improving a relationship, why not write a handwritten letter today? It might just work wonders! See you next time!

The tourism and hospitality industry is particularly sensitive to economic cycles and political trouble and can be badly affected in times of uncertainty. For example, the global nature of the industry means that it is vulnerable to (a) external events that cause fluctuations in tourist visits and spend. The global 2001-2004 economic downturn, 9/11, the Iraq War and the outbreak of SARS all led to a drop in revenue in the industry. These factors reduced the number of travellers internationally and (b) removed uncertainty and fragility in the tourism market. Many of these aspects are particularly pronounced in the airline industry and trade unions have often railed against the manner in which employees are used as ‘shock absorbers’ to protect the industry from the cyclical nature of the market. These hard approaches to HRM have seen major redundancy programmes in a number of airlines in recent years, especially after 9/11. On the other hand, a number of companies have sought a more soft approach to HRM which aimed at (c) increasing the customer responsiveness of their front-line staff. British Airways, for example, had a series of initiatives in the 1980s and 1990s such as ‘Putting People First’ and ‘Winning for Customers’. Among other things, these initiatives sought to introduce teamwork, implement extensive training programmes, enhance quality procedures, and develop multi-skilled staff. As companies alternate between hard and soft approaches to HRM, employees may become (d) confused as to what the company message is. Ultimately, employees may well be a company’s ‘greatest asset’, but in times of uncertainty and downturn are equally (e) expendable as recent history suggests.

Before the 1950s, tourism was very much an industry which was fragmented; hotels, transport operators, travel agents, and tour operators all tended to work independently of each other. Hotels were largely in the business of selling bed nights. Airlines and railways were in the business of selling seats. Travel agents, of course, were selling travel and holidays, but in each case they tended to operate very much as individual businesses. From the mid-1950s onwards, particularly in the UK, the growth of tour operators began to change the nature of the industry from essentially individual business activities to more integrated activities. Hotels, for example, were beginning to see customers as wanting a range of services rather than simply buying accommodation. So hotels began to develop shopping arcades and later to offer secretarial centres to try to increase the spend of guests within the hotel complex. Transport operators, particularly in the airline business, saw the sale of transport services as being integral to a much wider need. Airlines offered insurance and accommodation booking for travellers.

Grice, a British philosopher of language, proposed that, in addition to communicative meaning, there is another kind of meaning, which he referred to as natural meaning, characterized by ‘things’ that have meaning regardless of whether there is any communicative intention on anyone’s part. For example, I have learned that dynamite means danger. Thus, if I find a box of dynamite in my garage, dynamite is/means danger to me and I am going to be frightened. To recognize the danger, it is not necessary for me to recognize that someone intentionally placed the dynamite there with the intention of getting me to recognize that dynamite is dangerous; that is, it is not necessary that I recognize any communicative intention behind the box being there to recognize danger. And, further, even if the dynamite had been put there with the intention of getting me to recognize I was in danger, it would not be necessary for me to recognize that in order to feel in danger. Simply put, the word ‘dynamite’ on a box means danger .

①even if the reader had no personal connection to dynamite

②only when the word had no explicit communicative meaning

③because I experienced the destructive power of dynamite myself

④whether or not anyone intended to have me recognize that meaning

⑤when I understood the communicative intention conveyed by the box

Women’s dresses from the eighteenth century offered a great opportunity for repurposing, as they were frequently fashioned from long, uncut lengths of fabric. Textiles were significantly more (a) costly than the labor it took to alter them, and as a result, most garments were modified numerous times to keep up with changes in fashion. “Even the wealthy saved fabrics, remodeled clothes, and sold unwanted items in the secondhand market,” observes fashion scholar Linda Welters. “Sustainability was a way of life.” Indeed, although change is inherent to fashion, the remodeling of the existing clothing, rather than buying new, was a widespread practice. It is (b) rare, in fact, to find an eighteenth-century dress that does not show some sign of alteration. The cost of having a gown made, or remade, was only about half the cost of the textile itself and could be significantly less, depending on the type of fabric. In addition to updated dress silhouettes, accessories and trimmings played an important role in refreshing old clothing styles. For example, the addition of a row of lace on an upper part of a gown was an economical alternative to the full (c) replacement of the gown. Many eighteenth-century dresses, particularly those from the first half of the century, were constructed with relatively crude stitches, indicating that the effortless (d) preservation of the original gown was a consideration. Because fabrics (e) retained value even when they were not in fashion, hand-woven silks, cherished for their quality and beauty, were sometimes passed down through generations.

Fashion is always deeply cultural, and an excellent example of this can be seen in the evolution of European clothing. At the beginning of the Middle Ages, clothing tended to be simple and was ①frequently made of rough wool or animal furs. With advances in cloth making, however, fashion began moving toward styles ②what were more elaborate and form-fitting. In the Renaissance and Elizabethan eras, styles became even more refined. The clothes that wealthy people were wearing became increasingly fancier, with a particular emphasis being placed on smaller waists. The connection between clothing and social status was so pronounced that laws were enacted ③to limit the wearing of certain luxury items. ④Allowed only for higher social classes, luxurious styles and decorations such as feathers, silk, or velvet were used as a means of demonstrating one’s standing in society. This was further reinforced as upperclass styles came to be explicitly incorporated into cultural ceremonies so that ⑤their wearers’ roles could be identified clearly.

At the violin competition, my hands shook slightly as I stepped onto the stage. It had been years since I last performed on stage, and every eye in the room seemed fixed on me, pressing down with silent weight. I held the violin tightly, uncertain of how the first note would sound. Then, as I looked down, the polished surface caught a faint reflection - my father’s face, just as I remembered. In that moment, something settled. I thought of the quiet evenings when he sat beside me during practice, gently nodding in rhythm. His presence was steady and unwavering. I drew in a slow breath and raised the violin to my chin, anchoring it against my shoulder. The bow paused just above the strings, then touched down with purpose. My grip steadied, and with each movement that followed, I played Pachelbel’s Canon in D - no longer hesitating, but sure and measured from the first note on.

(A)

Every day after school, Sally walked home through the park. She liked listening to music in her headphones and looking at the trees on her way home. One day, while she was changing songs, she heard strange, unpolished music. She took off her headphones and followed the music through the park. She saw a kind-looking old woman sitting on a small bench and playing the violin. While (a) her music wasn’t perfect, there was something warm and welcoming about it. So, Sally walked closer.

(B)

The following day, they met at the same bench. Sally was happy to hear the old woman’s music again, but when she sat, the woman stopped playing. “Today is your first full lesson,” she said as she handed the violin to Sally. (b) She showed the young woman how to place her fingers on the strings. After an hour, she had learned some basics. Then, the old woman played the same music from the day before. Sally promised to meet her every day and started walking home. As she walked, simple, unpolished music was playing in her mind.

(C)

The old woman asked Sally if she played any instruments. Suddenly, Sally remembered learning the recorder from her older sister Beatrice when she was a girl. Beatrice had said, “You just have no musical talent.” Sally looked back to the old woman sadly and told (c) her the story. The old woman winked, handed the violin to Sally, and said, “You don’t need talent to enjoy playing.” Feeling brave, Sally accepted the instrument and tried playing. The sound was rough, and she felt embarrassed. But the old woman just smiled and said, “That’s how it begins. (d) I hope to see you again tomorrow.”

(D)

“Hello! Are you going to listen to my performance?” the old woman looked up and asked. Sally laughed and replied, “Oh sorry, I was just passing by.” (e) She turned to continue walking home, but decided to stop for a bit and listen. After the woman’s music finished, Sally asked her when she had started playing the violin. “I just started last year, but I always wanted to learn,” the woman answered. Sally was impressed by her response. Even though she loved listening to music, she could not play any instruments well.

W:Hello, class. Today, we’re going to explore the surprising world of animal intelligence, specifically how some of our marine friends use tools. Let’s take a look at a few examples. The first one is the tuskfish. This small fish carries a shellfish over to a rock and repeatedly hits it against the rock until the shell breaks open. And then there are octopuses. These incredibly intelligent creatures use coconut shell halves as portable shelters, carrying them around to hide in when predators are nearby. Some types of crabs also demonstrate tool use. They pick up stinging sea creatures and hold them in their claws, using the stingers as a form of defense. Finally, dolphins have been seen using sponges to protect their noses from getting scratched or cut while searching for food on the seabed. These examples show how even underwater, animals find innovative ways to adapt and thrive. Now, let’s watch a short clip to see some of these behaviors.

When you are working hard and actively engaging with all your course materials, there may be times when you need to remind yourself why you are doing this, and having a goal can be very motivational. You are probably not studying for the sake of studying; you probably have a career aim in mind, and having long-term and short-term goals can be really useful in helping you see the way ahead in a step-by-step way. For example, your long-term goal may be to be a doctor, or get accepted into a Master’s degree. But your short-term goal might be to pass the end-of-year exam, or to get better at writing essays. Your goals could be even more immediate; for example, when you sit down to study, you could think about what your goal is, and what you hope to achieve by the end of the study session-it could be to understand a particular concept, revise a particular topic, or write background notes for an essay. Having a focus can actually result in greater productivity and less time procrastinating.

W:Hello, viewers. I’m your life coach, Jinny Brown. Have you ever tried to accomplish a goal but failed? If so, reading your goals aloud before going to bed can help you to achieve them. When you do this before sleeping, your brain receives a signal that your goals are very important. This prepares your brain to focus on opportunities related to your goals the next day. Simply speaking, by reading your goals aloud before sleeping, your brain will search for ways to achieve them when you wake up. So, if you want your goals to become reality, it’s helpful to read your goals out loud before going to bed. How about giving it a try tonight?

Dietary behaviors are, in large part, the consequence of , many of which lead to increased caloric consumption and poor dietary choices. Individuals are subject to inherent cognitive limitations and mostly lack the capacity to consistently recognize, ignore, or resist contextual cues that encourage eating. Take, for example, going to the movies. For many, a night at the movies also means sharing popcorn, candy, and soda. People often cannot resist this learned indulgence and are encouraged by the environment to eat a particular food. Another example is eating potato chips or peanuts that have been set out during a friendly card game or conversation with others. Individuals often consume snacks not because they are hungry, but because they are prompted by the social environment, which encourages them to eat. Similarly, grocery stores and restaurants have discovered the profits in suggestive selling, a sales technique where the customer is encouraged to make an additional purchase by taking advantage of a two-for-one sale or special discount. Grocery stores often use placement of items to encourage impulse buying.

It is crucial to recognise the potential ethical considerations arising from using AI in market research. For example, given that researchers use historical data to train the optimising process of AI algorithms, there is a risk that the algorithm may reinforce biased traits and/or discriminatory performances. Another underlying concern arises through how data is collected and analysed on the Internet and social media. In some cases, it is not evident that the purpose of a website or an online game is to capture leads, and, in other cases, parts of social media conversations are taken without asking permission from the interlocutors, all of which may raise privacy concerns and/or violations of data protection laws. To reduce these risks, companies must prioritise ethical considerations and ensure transparency and accountability in using AI. It includes regular evaluations of AI models for potential bias or discrimination behaviour, being transparent with customers about how data is collected and used, and allowing customers to freely opt in or opt out of information provision.

AI does not match the human brain. In fact, any digital statistical pattern recognition system is subject to the garbage in, garbage out effect: the input determines the output. The better the data, the better the results. This effect cannot be entirely avoided and reflects the general human condition. We humans generate the data we input into this new technology, which then generates the outcome. The human mind and the collective psyche work the same way. Multiple cognitive frames and biases, adverse and toxic experiences, traumatic upbringings, false memory coding, pure nonsense, confabulation, hallucinations and ultimate wisdom all come together and feed into this digital algorithm. It is therefore not surprising that the digital output of an AI resembles the statistical average of the input we provide, including the programmers’ algorithms. Statistical pattern recognition on a massive scale simply confronts us with our own flaws and mirrors our own limitations. AI is thus no more objective and fact-based than natural human intelligence, since it is programmed by humans with their own cognitive limits and constraints within a certain historical and cultural context. The answers AI gives us simply .

Social media companies are working to keep you on site or attempting to deliver results useful to you. You can see this personalization reflected in the results of search engines, which try to maximize relevance: searching for “bakery” in New York should return different results than searching in Paris. Features like the little predictive-text cues of autocomplete also look to maximize relevance by suggesting refinements: typing in “cats” might prompt the user with “cats movie” or “cats that don’t shed.” Autocomplete suggestions offer a look into the algorithm’s understanding of accumulated user behavior ― an immensely important part of how key social media algorithms work. The outputs are personalized, but the data sets are massive, and the platforms are mining for similarities across vast quantities of user information. If a whole lot of users near you or similar to you complete the search that you’ve begun with specific words, the autocomplete algorithm takes that into account and may be more likely to suggest them to you. Since the results are derived from data related to millions of searches, autocomplete is, in a sense, holding a mirror up to society.

Limited animation is a process of making animated cartoons that does not follow a “realistic” approach. The short cartoons and feature films of Walt Disney from the 1930s and 1940s are widely acclaimed for depicting animated simulations of reality, with exquisite detail in every frame. However, this style of animation is very time-consuming and expensive. “Limited” animation creates an image that uses abstract art, symbolism, and limited movement to create the same effect, but at a much lower production cost. This style of animation depends more upon suspension of disbelief to tell a story; the story exists more in the viewer’s imagination. It also encourages the animators to indulge in artistic styles that are not necessarily bound to the limits of the real world. The result is a new artistic style that could not have developed if animation was solely devoted to producing simulations of reality. Without limited animation, such ground-breaking films as Yellow Submarine, Chuck Jones’ The Dot and the Line, and many others could never have been produced.

Central to the notion of brilliant leadership is the critical linkage between empathy and authenticity. While leaders may act on the premise that sensitivity to employee concerns is helpful in achieving organizational goals, brilliant leaders believe that empathy has value in its own right. In this regard, empathy is less a means to an end (e.g., profiting) but rather is consistent with Kant’s notion of “Character,” which underscores truthfulness as a core element of virtue. From a stakeholder perspective, particularly employees, brilliant leaders would be seen as behaving in ways that reveal a genuineness of motives. Guided by the deontologically-based philosophical guidepost, “We should do our duty for no other reason than because it’s the right thing to do,” the brilliant leader’s empathetic conduct is derived less from strategic or tactical interests than it is from one’s personal sense of integrity. That, then, is a defining feature of authenticity: it frames empathy as .

Leaders come in all shapes and sizes, but successful leaders tend to have one thing in common: the ability to share someone else’s feelings, known as empathy. While empathy forms in everyone to some degree, effective leaders know how to develop this emotional guidance system ①to connect with others’ feelings and perspectives. However, empathy in leaders is more than ②simply being kind to employees, clients, and customers. Empathetic people seem more approachable, focusing on the words of others. Utilized in this way, empathy can be considered a crucial part of ④maintaining employee satisfaction. Leaders who are unable to surround themselves with competent employees will not be successful. Half of the participants were then asked to engage in what the researchers call “affect labeling,” filling in responses to the prompt “I feel ,” while the other half were asked to complete a neutral shape-matching task. The affect-labeling group showed steep declines in heart rate and skin conductance compared to the control group, whose levels of physiological arousal remained high. Brain-scanning studies offer further evidence of the calming effect of affect labeling: simply naming what is felt reduces activity in the amygdala, the brain structure involved in processing fear and other strong emotions. Meanwhile, thinking in a more involved way about feelings and the experiences that evoked them actually produces greater activity in the amygdala.

What stresses you out more than anything? Perhaps it’s speaking in front of others. For many, this is so stressful it even has a name: glossophobia. The explanation for why it’s uncomfortable to have everyone’s eyes on you is probably that, for almost all of our evolution, it’s been extremely important not to be excluded from the group. To prepare for what might happen if you are evaluated and socially shamed ― and thus alienated from the group ― your brain fires up the stress system and your heart begins to beat harder. Our natural sensitivity to being evaluated by other people is another example of our brain not being adapted to the modern world. If we give a bad presentation at work, we are unlikely to lose our job and thus risk starving to death. But in the world we long ago evolved for, exclusion from the group could be a matter of life and death. was not merely a matter of safety but also of survival. You simply couldn’t make it on your own.

W:Honey, look at this “Adopt a Pet Day” poster that Henry drew!

M:Oh, it’s so nice! I love the Christmas tree wrapped in string lights. It’s so detailed.

W:Yeah! Henry’s drawing skills have really improved.

M:I agree. Look at the man on the left, holding the ladder.

W:He’s holding it for the woman standing on it.

M:Oh, look! The dog in a Christmas stocking is adorable!

W:And look at the angel on top of the tree. Its two wings are spread wide open.

M:Right. That looks very unique!

W:There are also two gift boxes on the rug in the bottom right.

M:They may be Christmas gifts from Santa. And right next to them is a cat lying on its stomach.

W:That’s so cute!

M:Absolutely! This poster really captures the spirit of “Adopt a Pet Day”!

(A)

Tim adopted a dog a few months ago. When he met his dog for the first time, he named him after his favorite character, Mickey. Mickey was a healthy dog, but he soon seemed to lack energy. Tim thought that taking care of a dog was much harder than he had expected. So, he decided to sign up for a dog training course. At the training center, he met an instructor named Jack. He emphasized to Tim, “Be sure to walk (a) your dog daily. Dogs need regular exercise to be happy and healthy.”

(B)

When Tim and Mickey arrived at the park Jack had recommended, dozens of dogs were already jumping and playing. Mickey looked nervous in the unfamiliar surroundings. Tim said, “Don’t worry, Mickey. It’ll be fun.” Just then, Tim saw a boy about (b) his age standing with a small dog. Gathering his courage, Tim walked over to him. “Hi, I’m Tim. Can I introduce my dog to yours?” The boy replied, “Sure. I’m Daniel. Oh, it looks like they like each other already!”

(C)

Having something in common as dog owners, Tim and Daniel enjoyed talking to each other. They spent the next two hours pleasantly chatting and decided to walk their dogs together regularly. “See you soon,” said Tim as (c) he and Mickey left the park. Over the next few weeks, the boys and their dogs became great friends. After returning from a walk one day, Tim said to Mickey, “Walking you felt like a burden at first, but now I see doing things for (d) you can be great for me, too!”

(D)

Being sure to follow Jack’s advice, Tim took Mickey for a walk every day. However, this extra responsibility soon seemed like a burden, and Tim felt exhausted. One day, Tim got a call from Jack. “Hello, Tim. How’s everything going with Mickey?” Tim replied, “Actually, it’s pretty hard walking him every day. We’ve been taking the same route, and it has become a little boring.” Jack offered (e) him a new idea. “How about going to Happy Dog Park?” Tim said, “That’s a great idea!”
